Age 65 and Medicare Enrollment

Medicare Enrollment is Mandatory

To maintain eligibility for MWRD retiree health insurance, you must supply the Fund with proof of enrollment in Medicare Parts A and B upon reaching age 65 (or earlier if you qualify due to disability).

Failure to provide proof of Medicare enrollment will result in termination of your MWRD health insurance benefits. Late enrollment may also lead to permanent penalties imposed by Social Security.

What You Need to Do

  • Enroll in Medicare Parts A and B before the Medicare effective date. For retired employees, the effective date is the first of the month in which you reach age 65. For active employees over age 65 and applying for retirement, the Medicare effective date is the first of the month after your retirement. Plan to apply for Medicare well in advance of that date to give margin for any administrative delays at Social Security.
  • Submit a copy of your Medicare card to the Fund in advance of your Medicare effective date to allow processing.
  • If you or your dependents qualify for Medicare due to disability, enrollment in Parts A and B is also required, and proof must be provided.

How to Enroll

Submit Proof

Once you receive your Medicare card:

  • Mail a photocopy with the MAPD  Enrollment Form to our office, or
  • Fax it to (312) 893-2136.

Failure to provide proof of Medicare eligibility or ineligibility prior to your 65th birthday will result in termination of District-sponsored medical and prescription drug coverage.

Important Notes

Medicare requires completion of a questionnaire to coordinate benefits. When you are asked about medical insurance coverage under your current employer, they are requesting information regarding your District retiree policy.
